Even though I love nail polish and change mine all the time, I haven’t yet attempted any creative nail patterns; I tend to just stick to one colour. But today I was in the mood to try something new :) I got the idea of using my beloved matte top coat to create a contrast between different finishes of the same colour. I experimented with a black base and I quite like how it turned out, especially because in comparison to the shiny half, the matte black looks almost grey in sun light. What do you think?
Here’s how I did it:
Step 1 - Base coat, especially important underneath black polish
Step 2 - Two coats of black nail polish. I let it dry completely, over night. I used Barry M.’s black.
Step 3 - To get an even straight line I cut some of these tip guides for french manicures like on the picture below.
Step 4 – I applied Essie’s matte top coat on one half of each nail and waited until it was completely dry before taking off the tip guides.

Looks pretty cool, like there’s a shadow or something. The most patterned I ever get is a french manicure or “rain” tips. Sometimes if I’m feeling bold, I’ll attempt flowers on my toes, but that’s about it. I should practice that more.

if you don’t have french tips, I’ve found that sticking regular tape (with the straight edge vertical on your nail) on your nail works really well too! My favorite is to go diagonally. Just make sure the polish is really dry before you go sticking tape on it.

I always say that because I look at my hands all day and no one else does, I should have whatever color or design I want. This would be such a good idea because it’s something just for you that only very detail-oriented people will notice.
i’m the same way. i’ve got nail color a.d.d. and need to constantly change it. i always find myself going back to black or neutrals, from bright or dark colors. super fun with the half matte. i love matte black! it’s soo boss.
